Healthy Condiments
Healthy condiments add nutrition
Many people don’t realize that the condiments we put on our food can be the downfall of the meal. Ketchup, perhaps the most popular for kids, is mostly high fructose corn syrup (as is BBQ sauce). Ranch dip usually has a lot of additives and unhealthy fat. Healthier versions of these three can be found, but try serving healthy condiments instead that add nutrients to your family’s meal. Hummus, guacamole, yogurt dip, nut butters, marinara sauce, balsamic vinegar, and olive oil taste great. Beware of condiments that are “lite” or “low fat.” These often have added sugar, additives, and sugar substitutes to make up for the loss of fat. Try to encourage kids to enjoy the taste of the food without having to smother it in ketchup.
