Selecting the Proper Athletic Shoe

Tips for Selecting the Proper Athletic Shoe

selecting-the-proper-athletic-shoeOne of the most important items you need for exercising is a good pair of athletic shoes. Poorly fitted athletic shoes can lead to problems such as sore heels, lower back pain, ingrown toenails, corns, fatigue, sore muscles, and poor posture. These problems can be avoided by following some of these simple tips for selecting the proper athletic shoe.

A Guide to Selecting the Proper Athletic Shoe

  1. Try to purchase shoes toward the end of the day, when feet are most swollen.
  2. Go to a reputable shoe store where your child can try on athletic shoes. Be sure the store has knowledgeable salespeople who can help you fit the shoe properly.
  3. Bring in your old shoes for the salesperson to look at. Frequently, they will be able to help selecting the proper athletic shoe by telling if your child’s feet supinate (roll out a little) or pronate (roll inward) just by looking at the wear and tear patterns on the shoes.
  4. Because kid’s feet change so fast, have your child’s feet measured for width and length every time you buy new shoes.
  5. Make sure that your child tries on both shoes in case each foot is a different size.
  6. When purchasing shoes, make sure that your child wears the same type of socks she plans to wear with the shoes. Your child’s toes should be able to wiggle freely.
  7. Look for a shoe that provides adequate cushioning and support. You might even want to purchase heel cushions (available at pharmacies or shoe stores) for children over eight. Remember to try your new shoes on with the pad inside. I recommend heel cushions for overweight children of any age.
  8. If your child has flat feet or pronates, look into having orthotic inserts made for your child.
  9. Cross-trainers are a great choice for all types of play, but if your child is committed to one sport, buy a specialized shoe. Running, basketball, tennis, baseball, and soccer all have special shoes.
  10. Kids can grow out of shoes in a few months so be sure to check how their feet are feeling. Old shoes can cause injuries, so check for signs of wear and replace the shoes when necessary.
  11. Be prepared to spend more for a quality shoe. A bargain shoe that causes blisters and other foot problems is really no bargain.
